Where we rest

Two nights, beautifully chosen

Each one a destination in its own right.

Friday, March 20
Bernardus Lodge & Spa
Carmel Valley, California
Twelve miles inland from the Pacific, where the valley opens into a warm, still pocket of California that feels entirely removed from the world. Bernardus is intimate in the way only a small, privately owned estate can be β€” 73 rooms set among lavender-bordered paths, old oaks, and the quiet that only descends this far from the coast. The air is different here. Warmer, softer, scented with herbs and dry grass.

The spa is genuinely exceptional β€” not a hotel spa but a destination in itself, with couples treatment rooms designed for exactly this kind of afternoon. The hot tub sits in a walled garden and faces the hills. At dinner, Lucia Restaurant & Bar earns its reputation: reserve for 8pm, ask for the fireside table, and order something that takes a long time to arrive. Nothing here rushes you.

The Upham Hotel
Santa Barbara, California
Santa Barbara's oldest continuously operating hotel, opened in 1871, and still quietly one of the best places to stay in California. The Upham is a collection of Victorian cottages draped in bougainvillea, connected by garden pathways and shaded by old trees. It feels like someone's beautifully maintained private estate β€” unhurried, uncorporate, genuinely charming.

Two blocks from State Street, and close enough to the Funk Zone to walk to dinner and back. The garden is the heart of the property β€” where the wine hour happens on warm evenings, where morning coffee tastes better than it has any right to, and where you'll want to sit for a while before checking out on Sunday. Small, personal, and exactly right.

Curated for tennis courts, spa rituals, olive grove walks, and candlelit evenings β€” and one person who runs cold.
